2 Rivers Remix Society, Full Circle: First Nations’ Performance, Savage Production Society & Vines Art Festival

Vancouver, BC—VirtualFeast.ca is a new Indigenous-led online platform to highlight and support the online streaming of contemporary Indigenous performances in the Summer of COVID-19. VirtualFeast.ca provides a single point of reference and discovery for audiences tuned into the burgeoning BC Indigenous music scene.

At launch, VirtualFeast.ca has confirmed over 40 different Indigenous performers, including Kinnie Starr & Snotty Nose Rez Kids, over the next two months from emerging youth to musical elders in a wide variety of genres: folk to funk, hip-hop to house, pop to rock. These artists reflect the diversity of Indian Country – rural and urban – with approximately half being women, one-quarter youth and one-tenth 2 Spirit.

VirtualFeast.ca is a collaborative project of BC Indigenous arts presenters including: 2 Rivers Remix Society, Savage Production Society, Full Circle: First Nations’ Performance, and the Vine Arts Festival – with streaming platform support from the First Peoples’ Cultural Council.

Here’s a sampling of VF programming; keep reading to find out more!

Full Circle’s Virtual Feast contribution kicks off with a live stream at 7 PM on July 24th with an intimate performance by award-winning singer-songwriter Lola Parks. Mimi O’Bonsawin explores the subjects of stories in an interactive song creation workshop at 6 PM on July 28th.

2 Rivers Remix Society presents Decolonise 2.0 on July 31 commemorating the 110th anniversary of the Declaration of Interior Tribes when the Nlaka’pamux, Secwepemc, and Syilx Nations unified their struggle to resist the “B.C.” Government theft of their unceded land. Decolonise 2.0 features Secwepemc/Nlaka’pamux artists The Melawmen Collective streaming their musical medicine from the stunning canyon location where the Declaration was signed on July 16, 1910; an interview with Nlaka’pamux elder Darryl Minnabarriet whose grandfather signed the declaration in 1910; and a mind-spinning set from 2-Spirit DJ O Show who lives at the confluence of the Indigenous, LGBTQ2S+ and Black Lives Matters resistance struggles. In the Summer of COVID-19 Indigenous artists are reverberating and remixing these Indigenous Nations’ 1910 declaration, “WE WILL HELP EACH OTHER TO BE GREAT AND GOOD”.

Vines 2020 Festival takes place from August 5 – 15th featuring A Virtual Feast Performance Resilient Roots on August 15th.
