ABORIGINAL HISTORY MONTH AT THE LIBRARY. A REASON TO CHECK OUT THE TPL

Toronto Public Library celebrates Aboriginal History Month.

Toronto, ON, May 26, 2015–Toronto Public Library will launch its “100 Reasons to Check Out TPL” campaign (#TPL100) to share its diverse services with Torontonians. The campaign encourages residents to obtain and use their own library card to avail themselves of countless programs and materials including those related to gardening. The Reasons include:

Reason 62: Native Peoples Collection tpl100.ca/62
The Native Peoples Collection has books, CDs and DVDs by and about the Native Peoples of North America.

Reason 91: Aboriginal History Month tpl100.ca/91
Throughout the month of June the library TPL celebrate First Nations culture and heritage with a series of informative and fun programs, from traditional round dances to Indigenous films, storytelling, author visits, and programs centred on traditional art, dance and medicine.

“Many people don’t realize their library is much more than a place to borrow books. We are a vital cultural commons, a place for the exchange of ideas, and a gateway to thousands of vital programs, technologies and services. We are part of what makes Toronto a great city to live in,” says Vickery Bowles, City Librarian at Toronto Public Library.

The “100 Reasons” campaign waslaunched on May 26 with a celebratory walk to City Hall by 100 Library ambassadors, including librarians, frequent library users and local celebrities.

Toronto Public Library branches are participating in ongoing community outreach initiatives through the months of May and June. Information about the “100 Reasons” campaign and specific branch programming can be found at TPL100.ca. The campaign coincided with the opening of the Library’s 100th branch, in Scarborough, which occured on May 20, 2015.
