ANISHINABEK MOURN THE PASSING OF CHIEF RICHARD SHAWANDA

UOI OFFICES (June 24, 2015) – Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Patrick Madahbee expresses his deepest condolences to the family of Chief Richard Shawanda of Sheguiandah First Nation who passed into the Spirit World today.

“I’ve known Richard since Grade 2,” says Grand Council Chief Madahbee. “I really got to know him well at the tribal council level on Manitoulin Island. He was one of those Chiefs who didn’t say much, but when he did, he came from a different viewpoint and made a profound statement.”

“My condolences go out to his family, friends and the Sheguiandah community,” says Madahbee.

Chief Shawanda served as Chief for a total of 12 years and was recently elected in 2013. He had also served as a councillor for his community.

The Anishinabek Nation established the Union of Ontario Indians as its secretariat in 1949. The UOI is a political advocate for 39 member communities across Ontario, representing approximately 60,000 people. The Union of Ontario Indians is the oldest political organization in Ontario and can trace its roots back to the Confederacy of Three Fires, which existed long before European contact.
