APPLY NOW FOR NSI ABORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY, DEADLINE NOV. 2

The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) is now accepting applications for the fourth year of its NSI Aboriginal Documentary course.

The course provides up to four Aboriginal director and producer teams with training, mentorship and up to $16,000 in cash towards the production of a short documentary.

Training begins in February 2016 with a two-week boot camp in Winnipeg and includes a trip to Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto.

Films made through the course have screened around the world.

Mia’, from Amanda Strong and Bracken Hanuse Corlett, had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2015.

Alice & Kevin, from Sam Vint and Chris Read, screened at the Maoriland Film Festival in New Zealand and has streamed on-demand in Australia.

Mia’, Released from Chantal Rondeau and Jennifer Bowen-Allen, and Spirit of Birth from Rebeka Tabobondung and Michelle St. John are screening at imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival which takes place from October 14 to 18.

Completed short documentaries from the course will air nationally as a one-hour special on APTN and stream on aptn.ca.

NSI staff members Ursula Lawson and Elise Swerhone serve as co-program managers.

Applicants must read the course guidelines to find out what the program entails. Applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. CT on Monday, November 2, 2015.

2015 marks the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) report. This year, NSI Aboriginal Documentary applicants must submit ideas that will tell stories that reflect (an) aspect(s) of what the report covers – painful pasts, hopeful futures, and the journeys in between.

These themes can be explored in limitless story ideas. If you have questions about whether your story idea qualifies, please contact program managers Ursula or Elise at (800) 952-9307 (toll free) or (204) 956-7800 to discuss your idea.
