CALL FOR PAPERS

Demeter Press is seeking submissions for an edited collection tentatively entitled

Mapping New Horizons: Feminist and Global Perspectives

on Young Mothers and Mothering

Editors: Deborah Byrd, Joanne Minaker and Iain Hay

Deadline for Abstracts: July 1, 2016

Collaborating across three countries, the editors welcome submissions from young mothers and from scholars, artists, social workers, nurses, and others who work with and/or conduct research on young mothers across the globe. For the purposes of this collection, “young” refers to mothers up to about age 24. Issues that might be examined in this multidisciplinary collection include (but are not limited to) ways in which various groups of young mothers are negatively affected by and/or resist dominant cultural narratives about young mothers; analyses of laws and public policies that have a significant impact on young mothers and their children; examinations of how geography or issues related to class, race, ethnicity, religion, ableism, sexual identity, and citizenship status affect young moms’ lives and/or cultural perceptions of young mothers; representations of young moms in literature, art, music, film, TV, print journalism, memoirs, online blogs, and social media; analyses of resources and services for young moms (teen parent programs, supportive housing facilities, online and face-to-face support networks, etc.); young mothers’ self-representations and stories; young moms as activists and leaders; young moms and their interactions with systems such as the welfare state, neo-liberalism, educational institutions, healthcare, child-welfare and protection agencies, and criminal justice systems; young moms and their relationships with their children’s fathers and/or impact of fatherhood initiatives and ideologies on young moms; young motherhood in various historical contexts; young mothers’ experiences of pregnancy, childbirth or adoption; young moms’ parenting styles and philosophies; young mothers’ relationships to their mothers and various “other mothers” and fathers.
