DREAM BIG CONFERENCE KICKS OFF MAY 27 | WHITE WATER GALLERY HIRES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

DREAM BIG CONFERENCE KICKS OFF MAY 27

With only a week to go the White Water Gallery is completing the final preparations for the Dream Big Conference taking place at the Capitol Centre from May 27 – 30, 2015. The four-day arts conference will feature several keynote addresses, a dozen panel discussions, workshops, performances, free information sessions, and much more.

The conference was developed to explore a wide range of issues facing artists and arts organizations in Northern Ontario, and many of the more than sixty presenters attending the conference are representatives of cultural spaces from the region. Youth engagement, communications strategies, community building, and arts advocacy are just a few of the topics that will be discussed. The Ontario Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation are also offering free information sessions about their various funding programs on May 27.

One of the major themes that will be explored is the benefits of partnership development, and the conference itself is a prime example. The White Water Gallery established partnerships with more than 20 organizations during the development of this conference, in addition to its three primary partners: Aanmitaagzi, Jumblies Theatre, and Zakide. White Water Gallery will also be publishing a document later this year outlining the process that this conference followed as a model for future collaborative events and a resource for arts groups across Canada.

Passes for the conference may be purchased from the Capitol Centre Box Office (705-474-4747) or online through their website: www.capitolcentre.org. They may be purchased for the day, the evening events, or the entire conference. Passes are not needed for the free events, although advanced registration may be required. A full schedule of events may be found at www.dreambignorth.com.

This conference was made possible through an investment of $120,000 over two years from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, a $10,000 Visual Arts Project Grant from the Ontario Arts Council, and a Local Initiative Contribution of $5,000 from NECO.

WHITE WATER GALLERY HIRES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

After a rigorous search the White Water Gallery is excited to announce the hiring of their new Executive Director, Serena Kataoka. The search began in February after Clayton Windatt, who has been fulfilling the role of Executive Director for the last seven years, confirmed that he would be leaving the position in June to pursue his independent arts practice.

Kataoka, a performance and video artist with a PhD in Political Science, has been active in the North Bay arts scene for the last three years. Since 2012 she has been a member of the Programming Committee for the Near North Mobile Media Lab and in 2013 she organized Why is North Bay a Creative City?, a panel discussion that featured several arts professionals from the North Bay area. In 2014 she worked with Aanmitaagzi as a performer in their presentation at Ice Follies and in their large-scale production Dances of Resistance. Kataoka is also a part-time faculty member in the departments of Social Welfare & Social Development; Gender, Equality & Social Justice; Political Science; and Criminology at Nipissing University.

The White Water Gallery has already begun the process of on-boarding their new staff member, although she won’t officially start as the Executive Director until early July. The Gallery is very pleased with the results of the hiring process, and acknowledges that it wasn’t easy to find a replacement for Clayton Windatt.

“We had so many amazing applicants it was hard to narrow it down,” says Hiring Committee member Tara Windatt, “but in the end Serena was just the right fit for our organization.”
