EDMONTON PREMIER OF “ELDER IN THE MAKING” BY CHRIS HSIUNG

EDMONTON PREMIER OF “ELDER IN THE MAKING” BY CHRIS HSIUNG

Growing up on the reserve (Saddle Lake First Nation) and moving to Edmonton to pursue my studies has been a challenge for myself and my family. Like many, I too have struggled to find my place and my passion for many years and will be finishing my Business Degree in the near future. I am extremely grateful for all the people I have met along the way and the many opportunities I have encountered over the years. To celebrate this community of amazing people I have decided to host the screening of “Elder in the Making”. It came across my news feed last term while procrastinating my studies and I believe that I was meant to see this as an opportunity. For many years I knew very little about my own cultures’ history and nothing about Treaty 8 or Treaty 7, and as an Aboriginal Albertan I feel it is important to for all of us to understand our provinces’ history and rich culture.

So please join Chris Hsiung, Cowboy Smithx, and myself (Mallory Yawnghwe) for an incredible evening of sharing and celebrating our community and culture through the Edmonton Premier of Elder in the Making!!

“Two young urban dwellers, one a Blackfoot aboriginal named Cowboy and the other a Chinese-Canadian newcomer named Chris, embark on a spiritual journey across traditional Blackfoot territory. Through thousands of years of ancient history guided by wisdom of modern day elders, they find the beginnings of the long road to reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous people.
“Elder in the Making” is a feature documentary inviting all residents of North America to explore the tragic and hopeful history of their home. Through the journey of two unlikely travel companions, this film uncovers our responsibility as stewards of the land and of the generations yet to come”.

We will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Edmonton Food Bank so please bring an item and together we can help them meet their demand!

6:45 pm – Presentation begins with an Opening Prayer
8:30 pm – Q & A with Chris Hsiung and Cowboy Smithx
