Indigenous Perspectives on the UN Convention on Genocide

Date: Monday, November 4, 2024 EST
Time: 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

This event features the award-winning work of Tamara Starblanket (Ahtahkakoop First Nation) from her book “Suffer the little Children”: Indigenous Nations, Genocide and the Canadian State (2018). For some reason, academia and the Canadian press don’t want to engage with this scholar about her legal analysis about Canada’s culpability for genocide, using the existing language of the Genocide  Convention, which Canada and other colonial forces worked hard to ensure would exclude the term “cultural genocide”. The denial of colonization as genocide is a cornerstone of ongoing denialism, and in this moment, with Gaza on everyone’s mind, Canadians will do well to reflect on what is happening in these territories of the Original Nations that we continue to occupy.
