TORONTO, ON (October 14, 2015) – Harbourfront Centre is thrilled to announce the return of its annual Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos festival, presented by Scotiabank, on November 7–8. Produced in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico, this two-day festival offers visitors the opportunity to explore the many traditions and rituals of this celebration, featuring music from Canada’s top mariachi band, dance performances and workshops, a Day of the Dead vendor market, crafts, ofrendas and more.
“We are Toronto’s longest running Day of the Dead festival and we want to maintain and showcase that legacy by honouring the rich roots and traditions of this holiday. Day of the Dead has a vibrant history and ever-changing narrative, and this year we celebrate through a contemporary lens,” shares Alexander Bordokas, lead Artistic Associate for Day of the Dead. “We have the honour of hosting master Mexican ceramic artist Tiburcio Soteno, who will be interviewed by Day of the Dead researcher, Chlöe Sayer. We will also feature a grand gathering of prominent folk musicians for a concert showcasing musical styles from the different cultural hotbeds of Mexico. To help our visitors to really get into the ‘spirit’, Scotiabank will be providing free Day of the Dead face painting.”
