Fifteen Stories of Truth and Reconciliation
Edited by Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail
The release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) findings and recommendations ignited a new spark of hope for the beginning of real change in Canada – a change of thinking, a change of opinion, a change in understanding. But how do we begin?
Featuring an afterword that is essentially a candid conversation by renowned CBC radio host Shelagh Rogers and Honourable Chief Justice Murray Sinclair about his time working with the TRC, this eye-opening collection of personal essays by Indigenous and non-Indigenous contributors across Canada welcomes you into a timely, healing conversation – one we’ve longed for but, before now, have had a hard time approaching.
Reflective and personal, these magazine – style pieces come from journalists, writers, academics, visual artists, filmmakers, city planners, and lawyers – all of whom share their personal light-bulb moments regarding when and how they grappled with the harsh reality of colonization in Canada, and its harmful legacy. Without flinching, they look deeply and honestly at their own experiences and assumptions about race and racial divides in Canada in hopes that the rest of the country will do the same.
Author Joanna Streetly reflects on the importance of individual relationships; journalist and author Katherine Palmer Gordon expounds on the significance of mother-tongue education; respected professor and author Emma LaRocque discusses the need for understanding on both a personal and national scale; filmmaker and city planner Kamala Todd reminds us to remember that all cities are Indigenous territories that need to be honoured through place making. Fifteen voices come together to paint a portrait of truth, and to begin the personal and work of reconciliation.
This collection is one of the many ways to begin the work of reconciliation in Canada. Metcalfe-Chenail hopes that these voices will inspire Canadians who want an open dialogue and to maintain the conversation long after the buzz of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report has faded.
