Without flinching, they look deeply and honestly at their own experiences and assumptions about race and racial divides in Canada in hopes that the rest of the country will do the same.
Author Joanna Streetly reflects on the importance of individual relationships; journalist and author Katherine Palmer Gordon expounds on the significance of mother-tongue education; respected professor and author Emma LaRocque discusses the need for understanding on both a personal and national scale; filmmaker and city planner Kamala Todd reminds us to remember that all cities are Indigenous territories that need to be honoured through place making. Fifteen voices come together to paint a portrait of truth, and to begin the personal and work of reconciliation.
This collection is one of the many ways to begin the work of reconciliation in Canada. Metcalfe-Chenail hopes that these voices will inspire Canadians who want an open dialogue and to maintain the conversation long after the buzz of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report has faded.
Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail is an award-winning historian, speaker, and occasional cbc columnist, who is passionate about telling hidden stories connected to Canada’s past. She served as Edmonton’s Historian Laureate from 2014–16, is a founding member of Reconciliation in Solidarity Edmonton (risedmonton), and is a co-lead on Reconciling Edmonton, a public art and heritage project seeking to generate discussion around shared history in the city. Author of Polar Winds: A Century of Flying the North and For the Love of Flying: The Story of Laurentian Air Services, she is a self-proclaimed history and aviation buff.
