Isuma exhibition in Toronto October 16th-21st: Channel 51 Igloolik

This exhibit will run from October 16th to October 21st at Trinity Square Video.
Address: 401 Richmond Street West, Suite 121. Toronto ON

Isuma Distribution International is proud to present, on the occasion of the 2017 imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, the first large-scale gallery exhibition celebrating 30 years of Igloolik Inuit video art from the Isuma, Arnait, and Artcirq collectives.

In words of curator Isabella-Rose Weetaluktuk:

“This anniversary presents an opportunity to take a look at what has been accomplished over the years. Isuma has contributed a incomparable body of work to contemporary Inuit visual culture. The core of this retrospective is an invitation to rediscover 40+ video works from Isuma the Arnait collective and Artcirq.

See the fruit of countless hours of research, hunting, tanning, stitching and beading as well as, of course filming. Hours that manifest themselves in bags, pants, jackets and films. An intricate blanket, stitched together by the women of Arnait Video to illustrate various stories of adoption as well as three soapstone carvings based on powerful moments from Atanarjuat are also included in this collection.”

Come discover more about the filmmaking practice behind award-winning feature films such as Atanarjuat (voted “No.1 Canadian Film of All Time” by TIFF poll), Journals of Knud Rasmussen, Before Tomorrow, and Maliglutit. A 30-year old practice rooted in Inuit values of consensus, working together, service to the community, and cultural authenticity.

Besides these photographs and objects, many of them displayed for the first time, Isuma’s acclaimed 1995 13-part dramatic television series “Nunavut (Our Land)” will be featured on a continuous loop throughout the duration of the exhibition.
