Braiding Knowledges Program Coordinator

• Salary range $26.77-$35.00/hour depending on experience of applicant.

This position will be navigating important responsibilities of GBB with the support of other Indigenous staff members, senior program managers, and the leadership team. In this role, the Braiding Knowledges Program Coordinator working with the Cultural Programs Manager and the Executive Leadership Team, will support the organization in five key areas of activity:

1. Learning – Support and facilitate organizational cultural learning opportunities for staff and Board members.
2. Internal Capacity Building – Support internal systems that honour cultural protocols and knowledge bundles. Help to Indigenize the learning and outreach materials of GBB.
3. Relationships – Liaise with Indigenous staff members, First Nations partners, cultural advisors, and Knowledge Holders to help guide GBB’s work in support of braiding knowledges as a charity. Help to guide the social enterprise in a way that upholds reciprocity within our communities.
4. Values – Help to meaningfully advance decolonization and anti-racism in GBB’s work. Find ways to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion within the organization and our region.
5. Braiding Knowledges – Support braiding knowledges (Edwi-waabndamang or ‘Seeing Both Sides’) in GBB’s work through respectful and appropriate application and use of cultural knowledges alongside (or instead of) dominant western knowledge approaches.

Specific projects in the first year include:

1. Co-create and present community workshops to share knowledges about ecosystem health, working with the State of the Bay program manager and other staff.
2. Collaborate with Georgian Bay Anishinaabek Youth (GBAY) to explore means and pathways of co-creating opportunities to lift Indigenous knowledges among youth in the region, and continue to help GBB bridge across cultures and communities.
3. Develop cultural education materials about species at risk, and help develop protocols for the use of Indigenous stories, art, and languages, working with the Lands and Waters team.
4. Facilitate Knowledge Holders’ visits, land-based learning, and/or Cultural Advisory Circles.
5. Expand the learning resources available to staff and help to uphold cultural protocols.
6. Support the planning and logistics for a Language Camp for Indigenous youth.

GBB will provide mentorship and opportunities for professional development within this position, including Anishinaabek/Indigenous facilitation training and time for cultural and language learning, as part of restoring Indigenous ways of being. We also acknowledge that we are learning how to do this work well and this creates a broad scope of creativity in co-creating priorities and deliverables with the GBB team and the partners and communities with whom we have the privilege to work.
