Title: Inuit Wellness Specialist

Position: Full-time One year contract

Reports to: Manager – Training and Education

Location: Remote (Ability to travel within the assigned geographic region, as well as occasionally to Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and or across Canada)

The Position

As the Inuit Wellness Specialist (IWS), you will engage virtually with Inuit youth from across Canada through Brighter Days: An Indigenous Wellness Program. Through this new program, the IWS will encourage help-seeking behaviors and help young people develop the skills, tools and resources to support their well-being on a range of topics including healthy relationships, human trafficking, substance use and more.

The Inuit Wellness Specialist (IWS) will bring an Inuit lens and focus to Kids Help Phone’s programs and activities and support the goals of Finding Hope: Kids Help Phone’s Action Plan for supporting First Nations, Inuit and Métis young people. The IWS will review and develop materials and content, often in partnership with Indigenous organizations.   As needed, the IWS arranges workshops and training opportunities to ensure all clinical staff have a solid foundation of clinical knowledge and skill. This position is part of the Training and Education team and will work in concert with this team as well as cross-departmentally at Kids Help Phone.

The Inuit Wellness Specialist will work directly with Inuit youth and add more Inuit perspectives to Kids Help Phone programs and services therefore only Inuit applicants will be considered.

 

What You’ll do

Training and Education:

Arrange, develop and facilitate various types of clinical training e.g. online, individual and group trainings and clinical supports
Oversee and assist in the development of clinical training materials for counsellors and crisis responders
Review internal and external facing content through a lens attuned to the current realities of Inuit youth, often in partnership with Indigenous organizations.
Develop stakeholder facing documents and messaging that align with Kids Help Phone values and clinical framework
Support special projects and program development

Outreach:

Engage with Inuit youth to build awareness and understanding of Kids Help Phone Services and provide youth with the skills, tools and resources to support their wellbeing
Build relationships with post-secondary Institutions to support the recruitment of Inuit counsellors, crisis responders and students
Support learning opportunities and mentorship program for Inuit post-secondary social services students

Service and Counselling Quality:

Provide Coaching to counsellors, texting supervisors and crisis responders to enhance supports for Inuit service users and ensure the unique realities of Inuit youth are understood
Support the regular review of counselling competencies and counselling model by the QA team, including providing clinical expertise and practice examples
Support the regular review of counselling standards to ensure that written standards reflect clinical best practice and cultural humility
Ensure that all training materials consistently uphold and teach to the expected standards and ensure  the unique realities of Inuit youth are understood.
Work collaboratively with the Knowledge Mobilization team to develop training and coaching materials based on current evidence based research

Other:

Provide information and support to other departments as required, to support fundraising, reports to funders, media events etc.
Partnership work, including facilitating training for external organizations and partners
Provide training leadership and expertise to non-service teams
Collaboration with other teams and departments for training or other purposes (IT, Workforce, Texting)
Assume other duties as assigned
This position requires some flexibility to attend or facilitate occasional evening or weekend activities or trainings

What You’ll Need

  • Post-secondary education related to clinical counselling, i.e. Social Work, Counselling Psychology, etc
  • Member of a professional order an asset as is a Master’s degree.
  • Counselling accreditations such as ASIST training preferred, SBT, Narrative therapy trainings, etc.
    Strong applied knowledge of academic writing standards (i.e. APA format)
  • Experience offering counselling to children and youth individually or in groups with preference for those with experience in brief-solution focused therapy, trauma-informed counselling, client centered counselling, crisis intervention and narrative therapy
  • Experience in and knowledge of e-counselling and support best practices
  • Bilingual in French and English is an asset
  • Bilingual in English and Inuktitut is an asset
  • Demonstrated excellence in academic writing
  • Experience working in Knowledge Translation is an asset

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team and independently
  • Ability to work remotely
  • Ability to support a culture that fosters high standards of ethics
  • Openness to new organizations structures, procedures and technology
