SUMMARY

The Special Education Coordinator reports to the Multi-Year Action Plan Manager for the Kinoomaadziwin Education Body (KEB). This position is responsible for providing support to the Participating First Nations with the development of Special Education policies and guiding documents. The Special Education Coordinator works closely with the Regional Education Council Coordinators, the Participating First Nations, and other program partners. This position supports the implementation of the Master Education Agreement and the Multi-Year Action Plan, as well as the strategic plan of the KEB.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be familiar with, and develop a working knowledge of, the Special Education Project within the Multi-Year Action Plan.
  • Communicate with the Participating First Nations regarding the Anishinabek Education System (AES) Special Education Guideline, the Shared Services template, and the Education Service Agreements Special Education Appendices.
  • Develop a plan to support Participating First Nations to create local Special Education resources, using the AES Special Education Guideline.
  • Respond to inquiries related to Special Education programs and services and provide support to communities.
  • Develop Special Education communication materials for public sharing within the AES.
  • Liaise with the Multi-Year Action Plan Manager and the Joint Master Education Agreement Committee on matters related to Special Education. Provide updates and develop recommendations for the Joint Master Education Agreement Committee regarding activities and deliverables within the Special Education project.
  • Plan, prepare materials, and facilitate professional development and training opportunities for Participating First Nations as outlined in the Multi-Year Action Plan.
  • Participate in and provide information and leadership to the Master Education Agreement’s Special Education Committee.
  • Collaborate with the Data Management Officer to ensure that Special Education data is effectively maintained in the KEB’s information system.
  • Develop and monitor reporting processes that will enhance data management and feedback collection, as it relates to the Special Education project.
  • Collect, record, and summarize feedback to support procedural enhancements and streamlining opportunities.
  • Conduct research, evaluation, and analysis on the program implementation. Identify potential required Special Education services within the AES.

As required by the Multi-Year Action Plan Manager and the Director of Education, the Special Education Coordinator will perform other duties.

THE REQUIREMENTS

This position requires an individual with the following education, experience, skills, and personal characteristics:

  • Post-secondary degree in the field of education with additional qualifications in special education
  • Special Education Specialist is an asset
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in program administration and/or special education teaching experience
  • Experience in policy development
  • Experience in research and evaluation
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous communities and Indigenous education
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with First Nation representatives, education partners, and staff
  • Familiarity with Indigenous health and well-being
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Excellent organizational and office management skills
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks in a busy work environment
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Dependability and reliability
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Valid driver’s licence and a satisfactory criminal records check
  • Ability to travel

OTHER DETAILS

This is a full-time term position until August 31, 2023. The hours of employment are between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm with a one-hour break for lunch. The nature of this position is such that some overtime may be required, and possibly work on weekends or during the evenings.

All employees will comply with KEB Personnel and Financial Policies.

The KEB head office is located on Nipissing First Nation, however, this is a remote position. Details of the location and office will be dependent on the successful applicant, pursuant to the KEB policies.
