As Chair of the Justices of the Peace Appointments Advisory Committee, I am pleased to announce that at the request of the Attorney General and in accordance with the Justices of the Peace Act, the Committee is inviting applications to fill 44 vacant justice of the peace positions across the province of Ontario until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2020.
The Committee is mandated by the Attorney General of Ontario to provide a list of recommended candidates that reflect the diversity of the people and communities within Ontario to fill the vacancies that arise on the Justice of the Peace Bench. As you know, these important judicial officers are critical to the efficient functioning of our courts, with jurisdiction over the majority of provincial regulatory offences, municipal by-law prosecutions and most bail hearings.
Justices of the peace need not be lawyers and they are recruited from the communities they serve with a distinct focus on recruiting individuals who have strong connection to the community. Given the distinct and unique realities of individual communities across Ontario, the Committee is especially committed to connecting with prospective candidates from diverse communities across Ontario, with particular emphasis on Indigenous communities. It is critical that all Ontarians see themselves reflected on the Bench.
I have attached a link to the full advertisement here. I ask that you please share the news of this opportunity in your networks where you feel appropriate in order to reach as many qualified prospective applicants as possible. We are also measuring outreach and if you could let us know what the “reach” was in circulating this advertisement, that would be appreciated.
