Melina Laboucan-Massimo, member of the Lubicon Cree First Nation, discusses the impacts of the Tar Sands project on her family and her traditional territories. Melina shares about the significance of the land for her and the roots of her strength and knowledge. Melina points out that the Tar Sands is a critical issue not only for the Lubicon Cree but; for everyone; and that because of this, taking action should include alliance building.
The Lubicon Lake Nation is a sovereign and self-determining peoples. The Lubicon Lake Nation is a distinct Indigenous Nation with a well-defined traditional Territory in what is now known as north-central Alberta, Canada. The Lubicon Lake Nation are Cree peoples, Neheyiwak, who have been hunting, fishing and trapping in their Traditional Territory long before the creation of Canada. The Lubicon continue to occupy and protect their Traditional Territory today. They have never surrendered or ceded their land to a foreign government. The Lubicon Lake Nation maintains jurisdiction over, authority for, and autonomy of their Traditional Territory, Nation and peoples.
