About Mia’

A film that challenges the notions and format of conventional documentaries and presents Indigenous oral traditions as truth and not myth or legend will be making its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Directors Amanda Strong and Bracken Hanuse Corlett’s film Mia’ is a hybrid documentary using animation and sound as a vehicle to tell the story of transformation and re-connection of the main character Mia’ struggles to return home, as she traverses through polluted waters and skies, witnessing various forms of industrial violence and imprint that have occurred upon the land.

This is the second year in a row that a film made by Cree/Anishinaabe filmmaker Amanda Strong is premiering at the festival. Last year at TIFF, the stop motion film ‘Indigo’ opened to rave reviews while also winning best Canadian Short Drama at ImagineNATIVE (2014), best short film at Womens’ International Film, Television and Showcase in Los Angeles (2014) and Cine Las Americas Best Short Narrative in Austin Texas (2015).
