Mistatim Nominated for 2016 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Production

Good news! Our production of Mistatim was recently nominated for a 2016 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Production. Mistatim is about the taming of a wild horse and the forging of the truest of friendships. Congratulations to our entire team for this much deserved effort.

Other good news is that our newest dance work, Backbone, was recently selected from a competitive pool of 56 applications worldwide by ISPA’s Pitch New Works Committee. Artistic Director Sandra Laronde will pitch Backbone as part of the 98th International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA) Congress in Melbourne, Australia on June 3, 2016 at the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre.

It is very exciting for us to ‘pitch’ to over 400 delegates from all over the world. Twice a year, 10 submissions are selected to be “pitched” to more than 400 performing arts professionals from over 50 countries at ISPA’s annual Congresses. We would like to express our gratitude to the ISPA Congressand also to Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council for making this possible.

Backbone is a cutting-edge new dance and live music creation inspired by the ‘spine’ of the Americas, including the Americas. Featuring eight dancers and live music, Backbone combines contemporary Indigenous dance with athleticism to express its power, formation and spirit. Co-produced and an original commission by The Banff Centre.

“Backbone sounds like those mountains have emerged from two million years worth of restlessness. The choreography itself is raw…frequently ferocious. There’s wind, too, which, like Backbone, doesn’t blow – It howls. The audience responded with a thundering standing ovation that might have moved the mountain a little itself.” – Calgary Herald
