In the last week, New York City has seen a flurry of Indigenous climate activism for the United Nations Climate Summit, and for the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples.
The Summit began with the People’s Climate March on September 21, 2014 where hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Manhattan, marching and calling for change. Celebrities in attendance included Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, and Edward Norton, all of whom marched alongside the Indigenous Bloc. Not only did the People’s Climate March occur in New York City, but 2,808 solidarity marches were held worlwide in 166 other countries (Source: www.peoplesclimate.org) to honour the day, and to honour the 100+ world leaders who gathered in NYC to discuss climate change.
