Red Sky Performance, Canada’s leading company of contemporary Indigenous performing arts, founded by executive and artistic director Sandra Laronde, is proud to kick off our fall season with the World Premiere of MIIGIS from September 15, 16 and 17, 2017 at Fort York National Historic Site.
Fusing contemporary Indigenous dance with powerful live music, MIIGIS explores the catalysts, trade routes and stories of a journey from the Atlantic Coast to the Great Lakes, and the seven prophecies marked by miigis.
With concept and direction by Sandra Laronde, MIIGIS is choreographed by associate artist Jera Wolfe. Six dancers for MIIGIS include Cody Berry, Eddie Elliott, Miyeko Ferguson, Lonii Garnons-Williams, Julie Pham, and Jera Wolfe, who will be joined by Paskwa Lightning and 12 traditional dancers. Live original music will be performed by Rick Sacks, Julian Cote, Pure Fe, Marie Gaudet, Marc Merilainen, and Pierre Mongeon, with Bryden Gwiss Kiwenzie.
“We are very excited to reveal the new terrain of dance and music that immerses ourselves and audiences in the power of nature and Indigenous prophecy,” says artistic director Sandra Laronde.
A preview of MIIGIS will be presented at the prestigious international dance festival Jacob’s Pillow in Becket, Massachusetts in August 2017.
