imagineNATIVE/Canadian Media Production Association
Canadian Indigenous Film Producer Mini-Lab
imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival is thrilled to announce the selected participants for its first ever Canadian Indigenous Film Producer Mini-Lab, who will be mentored by Cherokee filmmaker Heather Rae from October 15-17, 2015. The three Indigenous producers, who were selected from dozens of outstanding submissions, are Cara Mumford (Métis), Jeremy Torrie (Anishinabe), and Michelle Latimer (Métis/Algonquin).
The Canadian Indigenous Film Producer Mini-Lab is designed to hone the skills and knowledge base of emerging Canadian Indigenous producers through dedicated one-on-one engagement with an established Indigenous creative industry leader.
Through a series of daily intensive half-day sessions, moderated by Mohawk producer and imagineNATIVE board member Paula Devonshire, Heather Rae will discuss her own projects and experiences, share best practices of creative and business production. The results of the Mini-Lab are new understandings and fortitude in producing practices from Indigenous perspectives, and equip the three participants with the producing savvy needed to develop their upcoming projects.
Cara Mumford (Métis) has written, produced and directed several short films, including When It Rains, a one-minute film commissioned as part of imagineNATIVE’s Stolen Sisters Digital Initiative in 2012.
Winnipeg-based Jeremy Torrie (Ojibway) is a writer, producer and director. In 2003, Jeremy produced his first dramatic film, Cowboys and Indians: The Killing of JJ Harper, which garnered 6 Gemini nominations.
Award-winning filmmaker Michelle Latimer (Métis) is a director, producer, actor and programmer. Her short and feature works have screened at imagineNATIVE and at festivals internationally, including Berlin and Cannes.
In addition to the Mini-Lab, Heather Rae is also the focus of the inaugural imagineNATIVE Artist Spotlight. The Artist Spotlight acknowledges Indigenous creative leaders whose work has broken new ground through art and industry and who continue to make lasting contributions to the Indigenous media arts landscape. For this Spotlight the Festival brings Heather Rae and her celebrated work to imagineNATIVE audiences in three screenings and a photo exhibit.

The 16th annual imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival will be held in Toronto October 14-18, 2015.
