TRACK PREMIERE ‘PRIDE OF LIONS’ – JOEY STYLES

First Nations singer-songwriter and hip-hop artist Joey Stylez is thrilled to debut his latest track “Pride of Lions” via Complex.

The new track is the rapper’s first to be released since 2013: “When Martina (Dragonette) laid down her parts I couldn’t do anything but let off a proud smile,” said Joey. “I knew after all these years of floating around from city to city I was finally about to showcase the INDIAN OUTLAW meets GREY MAGIC package I was born to share with the world so I let the warrior spirit write my bars.”

“[Pride of Lions] is about feeling your own power and being in tune and comfortable with your inner, animalistic strength,” says Martina Sorbara of Toronto’s Dragonette, whose vocals feature on the track.

Aside from making music, Joey is also a fashion designer and First Nations activist. His debut studio album The Blackstar was released in 2009 to critical acclaim, earning Joey a JUNO nomination and three Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards. In 2013, the CBC listed Joey Stylez as one of the Top 25 Canadian rappers of all time.

About Joey Stylez:
Passionate about his heritage and artistic expression, Joey continues to explore Native American culture through urban mainstream fashion and music. His 2007 video entitled “Living Proof”, featuring a Pendleton coat, illustrates injustices faced by aboriginal youth in residential schools. By reclaiming traditional imagery, Joey brings themes associated with Aboriginal aesthetics to the forefront of an ongoing debate.

His critically acclaimed project “FEATHER + ROSARY” emphasized the social, political and economic struggle that young Aboriginal men face such as violence, addiction and gang culture. Joey continues to perform in isolated First Nations reserves, working to empower and educate youth.

Joey has created #GreyMagic which represents the strength in affecting change through leadership and social awareness while maintaining himself as the renegade he was born to be.
