VISUAL ARTS PROGRAM – GALLERY EDUCATION INDIGENOUS PRACTICUM

Overview

The Gallery Education Indigenous Practicum is designed to enhance participants’ knowledge, build administrative skills, and provide work experience for emerging artists and art educators who have an interest in gallery-oriented public programs. The participant will work with and be mentored by staff from all areas of the Visual + Digital Art department: Creative Residencies, Walter Phillips Gallery, and the Banff International Curatorial Institute.

Walter Phillips Gallery is committed to serving our local Indigenous communities, so a portion of the program development will be in collaboration with schools in Treaty 7 territory.

What does the program offer?

Learning opportunities will arise in the development, organization, delivery and promotion of public programs and events that complement the Gallery’s exhibition schedule. These activities include assisting in the delivery of school programs, tours, and hands-on workshops designed for visitors of all ages and diverse backgrounds. You will also be involved in the development of grant applications and various stakeholder reports.

In this practicum, you will develop enhanced decision-making and problem-solving expertise, as well as more mature communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills. In addition to the everyday responsibilities, you will have dedicated time to realize personal research goals. Opportunities to attend formal lectures, discussion groups, seminars, and other cultural events are all part of this program.

Who should apply?

Enrolment to this program is limited to individuals of Indigenous descent (status, non-status, Métis, or Inuit) who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. The successful participant will be required to provide a clean Vulnerable Sector check prior to the program start date.

This program is ideal for recent graduates of studio-based, art education or community service programs to gain professional experience.This program requires a full-time commitment .

Eligibility: As this program is longer than 6 months, international student visa regulations mean that enrollment is limited to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.
