Winnipeg, MB – Destiny Seymour (Anishinaabe), an interior designer from Treaty 1 territory (southern Manitoba), realized a childhood dream today when her textile company, Indigo Arrows, was profiled in the January/February 2017 edition of Canadian Interiors Magazine.
“I used to get my mom to buy Canadian Interiors for me when I was a kid and I’ve always imagined how great it would be to see my work featured in their magazine,” explains Seymour. “Their aesthetic has always inspired me and I can honestly say that the magazine played a role in my decision to pursue and complete a masters degree in interior design.”
Seymour started Indigo Arrows after 10 years in the architectural industry where she struggled to find finishes and materials that reflected or referenced the values and traditions of local Indigenous nations in Manitoba. “There’s a lot of great Native-inspired patterns available from Southern and Western regions of North America, but I really want new interior spaces to remind visitors who the local Indigenous nations are,” she explains.”My home textile line is a first step towards that goal and I plan to expand into custom furniture and commercial finishes as the company grows.”
The textile designs by Indigo Arrows are a contemporary take on the pottery patterns and bone tool engravings of her Anishinaabe ancestors and their Indigenous trading partners. Local archaeologists estimate that some of these pieces range from 400 to over 3000 years old. The initial line, which is currently out of stock, includes tea towels, napkins, place settings, table runners, and pillows that are hand printed in small batches on pre-washed 100% linen using eco-friendly inks. Seymour also plans to expand this line to include wallpaper, fabric, and rugs.
Indigo Arrows will have a second batch of tea towels, prints, and pillows ready for purchase from the indigo-arrows.com website on February 21.
