The video was produced with the financial assistance of MuchFACT, a division of Bell Media Inc.and MadRuk Entertainment put it all together.
The video shines a spotlight on the humanity of Indigenous people by taking viewers from the impersonal and lonely work day of a young professional to the caring community of a modern competition pow wow. The song title and story line work together to challenge the idea that Indigenous culture is dead or dying.
“I want Canadians to see that pow wow culture is beautiful in both imagery and spirit,” explains DJ Shub, born Dan General. “I also want young Native kids to know that they can find support and happiness in their lives, even if they can’t see it right in front of them. That’s what the video says to me.”
DJ Shub is set to release his solo debut EP, entitled PowWowStep, on Friday, December 2. A release party is set for that same day at the Velvet Underground in Toronto with guest appearances by Classic Roots, DJ Acro, Philip Rothschild, and many more.
