Medicine Wheel Publishing commemorates Orange Shirt Day with the release of a beautiful new children’s book by Phyllis Webstad

Victoria, BC – A specialist in publishing Indigenous books, Medicine Wheel Publishing (“Books B.C.” 2024 Publisher of the Year) marks Orange Shirt Day this year by releasing Today Is Orange Shirt Day by Phyllis Webstad, an authentic, age-appropriate touch-and-feel board book designed for ages 0-3 to introduce young children to the importance of Orange Shirt Day – The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Written by Webstad—founder of the Orange Shirt Day movement and author of the award-winning picture book Every Child Matters, and beautifully illustrated by Coast Salish artist Natassia Davies—Today Is Orange Shirt Day guides youngest readers through the sights of Orange Shirt Day. The book provides a gentle way to introduce the next generation to the importance of learning and opening our hearts to the history and legacy of residential schools.

Today Is Orange Shirt Day will be available at bookstores and online retailers on August 20, 2024.

About the Author: Phyllis Webstad (nee Jack) is Northern Secwepemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation (Canoe Creek Indian Band). She is the founder of the Orange Shirt Day movement and a tireless advocate for Indigenous education and reconciliation. Phyllis has received multiple honorary doctorates for her life’s work.

About the Illustrator: Natassia Davies is a Coast Salish artist, graphic designer, and illustrator whose work amplifies the voices of Indigenous peoples through visual communication. She has illustrated several children’s books, including White Raven, shortlisted for the Indigenous Voices Awards and the City of Victoria Children’s Book Prize.
