Community radio and television broadcaster U Multicultural continues its mission of preserving and celebrating Indigenous languages and stories through the Amplifying Voices initiative.
In partnership with First Peoples Radio, Amplifying Voices aims to preserve, promote, and revitalize Indigenous languages across Canada. Through 24 radio podcast episodes, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community leaders share their stories, cultures, and history in Cree, Ojibwe, Dakota, Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, and Inuvialuktun.
“Amplifying Voices, which is one of the many projects that U Multicultural initiates; these types of projects are very important in my thoughts. It gives the opportunity for people from all walks of life to share some of their own life experiences, teachings, and learnings so that we can all benefit from it. This type of work needs to continue, if not expand.” – Robert Maytwayashing, Project Participant and Ojibwe speaker.
Developed in collaboration with over 60 Indigenous language keepers, experts, broadcasters, and academics, Amplifying Voices is guided by an Indigenous advisory group that includes broadcasters, language experts, Elders, and authors. The program focuses on:
- Enhancing Indigenous Language Content: Improving the quality of Indigenous language programming produced by Indigenous radio broadcasters.
- Expanding Indigenous Language Content: Increasing the amount of Indigenous language content available on the airwaves.
- Supporting Language and Cultural Revitalization: Contributing to the preservation and promotion of Indigenous languages and cultures.
- Impacting Indigenous Communities: Strengthening Indigenous broadcasters and their communities.
“At U Multicultural, we take immense pride in producing a significant volume of Indigenous language programming, preserving and celebrating the linguistic heritage of Canada’s First Peoples. These programs are vital in keeping Indigenous languages alive for future generations while fostering understanding and reconciliation among all Canadians. Partnering with First Peoples Radio allows us to extend the reach of this programming across the nation, ensuring that the voices, stories, and languages of Indigenous communities are heard, respected, and valued coast to coast.” – Taya Rtichsheva, Founder and Executive Director, U Multicultural
The project is funded by the Community Radio Fund of Canada, with additional funding support from Suncor Energy Foundation and the Inspirit Foundation.
